Never been to a Ploughing Match? Well now is the time to put that right. On Thursday 3 October 2024, the Trumpet and District Agricultural Society Annual Ploughing Match is being held at Sintons End Farm, Acton Beauchamp. Take the Bishops Frome road from Acton Cross.
Ploughing is a big thing in Herefordshire with eleven ploughing matches taking place over a five-week period in September/October. The Trumpet Ploughing Match is one of only two that take place midweek meaning schools and colleges can come along to enjoy a real country experience.
The best time to arrive is from mid-morning onwards when you can stroll around to look at both tractors and horses ploughing. At about midday the Domestic Section tent opens so that you can see who has won the prizes. This vibrant event area includes classes for Floral Art and Cut Flowers, Eggs, Vegetables, Cakes and Pastries, Jams and Chutneys, Wines and Cordials, Handcraft, Photography, Art and 60 years and older. Commercial classes are on offer for Hops, Apples, Eggs, Wheat, Barley, Oats, Beans, Oil Seed Rape and Forage Maize.
Classes are open to all – you do not have to be a Trumpet member to compete look on our website for the schedule. Lunch is a must – where else in Herefordshire can you have the full roast in the middle of a field?
Visitors can see the skills of both tractor and horse ploughing. Great precision is required to plough to the correct depth and in a straight line whilst effectively turning the soil. Each competitor has their own plot which is judged over several hours. This is a great day for school groups. Classes for children are divided into four age groups.
Children can enter as an individual, but if you are a teacher why not enter your whole class?
